I’m like many of you – I’d rather visit the dentist than organize my garage. I recently took on this daunting task.
Here’s what I came up with:
Least Fun
Create organization piles in your yard - Garbage, Sell, Keep, Donate, Ehh Not Sure. Take everything out of the garage and place in designated piles.
Pro Tip: Now is an excellent time to toss unwanted gifts* or broken items that have not been used in 256 years. *Gifts can be anything you have received, such as a traditional gift or something your neighbor, friend, or in-law has left behind that insist you should have but don’t necessarily want or need. Likely being tossed into your garage.
Note: Please dispose of harmful chemicals properly. Most of your local auto parts and service shops will take used motor oil and dispose of properly. Recycling Centers (dump) will recycle everything from paper to paint. Think about this: Hundreds of thousands of gallons of harmful chemicals can be displaced into the local ecosystem during a hurricane.
Not Fun
Sweep out garage. You can try and remove rust and oil stains, however, they are not easy to clean. More times than not, the stains, will never be fully removed.
Now would be an excellent time if you want to redo your flooring with paint or mats.
Fun? Nope - but we are close
Try and store vertically. If you are handy, you can build your own shelving system. I bought rolling shelves. They were easy to put together and relatively inexpensive at $100 a piece (you don’t need an engineering degree to assemble – I know you have been there before). I placed everything in bins and stored them on shelves.
For tools and miscellaneous items, I bought sliding racks. Racks keep everything off the ground in a neat, organized fashion.
Fun Fact: The racks have interchangeable attachments that hold everything from a broom to a bicycle.
Fun!
Looking at the “fruit of your labor” Enjoy your new garage!
